I shoot TV news and carried one in my gadget bag for several years. Didn't use it very often. Slow to power up and configure for each use or I would have given it 5 stars. The menu is not intuitive at all. But the features built into this thing are amazing, and so is the audio quality. The on-board mics can be programed to perform like several different brands of high quality mics. They will surprise you! I was never disappointed with the results. Would have used it more if it didn't usually take me several minutes to power it up and set it for what I needed to do. Zoom H4N Recorder is outstanding!

I bought this as a replacement for my poor abused Zoom H2 that has been all over the country with me. When it had a hiccup and I had to skip 3 interviews it was time to find a new one. I originally looked for another H2 but then I found this gently used for testing only one and got a great deal. I would have bought it brand new anyway because it is incredible. I can use my professional XLR microphones for face to face interviews AND it is a mini mixer that allows me to tape phone interviews through SKYPE. I got so much more than I expected with this great little piece of equipment. Buy it new. The difference in price is small compared to used.

I bought this product to help myself multitrack, as well as record gigs that I perform at. It is an outstanding device. People have complained that it is not intuitive. I have found it to be fairly intuitive with many features. You simply have to play around with it. The onboard mikes are great. I have external mikes, but don't think I will use them. Getting the remote is a very wise idea.

My only complaint is that the device could use some upgrading in terms of the screen. It seems as though it was designed a while back and has not been improved upon.

Music Application

Bought this unit to just press and record, which it does well. Also started using the input feed to record straight from my equipment. Bang for the buck

Not intuitive, per se, but the remote helps. Sort of bulky but the mics are great and soubd better than comparable tascam by a mile.

Good value for money

After my H1 died on me, I needed a new field recorder. I considered upgrading to the H4N but didn't want to spend too much money on a new recorder, and settled for the first generation. It's a little clunky to operate: a. the menu is not at all intuitive - I spent 10 minutes figuring out how to erase files, not having the manual at hand; b. it takes a bit long to power up; c. the plastic cover necessary to screw on a hand held mount or a tripod is strapped on with velco straps which both doesn't look very professional and is time consuming to put in place and remove (necessary to replace batteries) but if you can live with that you can have a nice recorder with pristine recording quality at about 50% of what a new H4N would cost. In terms of build quality it is certainly sturdier than the H1, although also a bit bulkier and heavier.Read full review...

Zoom H4 received with same failure as the one that it was to replace (no card) also battery operation didn't work.

It is a good unit. Ive noticed that the display is large enough on more recent models. I enjoyed my original for several years be for the (no card) failure.
