"Whirlygig" - The Lovemongers

Brace yourselves, dudes and dudesses! Forget vinyl, the diamond styli and the Perle Mesta. I'm about to review a record so new that it has only been released on that newfangled CD medium. In fact, it's not even a full decade old! How does "Whirlygig" by the Lovemongers fit in with my demonstrated penchant for the 60's and 70's? It doesn't. You know what they say about petty consistency.

I am an unreconstructed "Heart" junky. Ever since "Magic Man" I have grabbed their albums the day they came out. I even scored a "Mushroom" version of Magazine, although I had to trade a See Emily Play picture cover single to get it. Bona fides thus established, I proceed: The Lovemongers, for all practical purposes, are Heart on a budget. They're Ann and Nancy Wilson reunited with their co-writer Sue Ennis, of whom I'm a fan, too. So what more could I want? A bigger budget!

When I got this record first I listened to it on a road trip and must have played "Elysian" about 20 times to memorize the lyrics. (No, I'm not sure why, either, although I love it.) At least the lyrics aren't cryptic as are those of many of the other tracks.

"Hold on to the hours - they are flowers that won't bloom again..." (Good advice to the subject of the song, which is a proper name, not a reference to the Elysian Fields nor to the series of dots above.) If that didn't convince her that things will improve, she's clearly not a heart fan!

I didn't love all the other tracks, although quite a few were outstanding. Too much bluesy stuff, as even Heart occasionally succumbs to that temptation. And what about my "bigger budget" comment? The recording is less than stirling. It suffers from a "phasing" that seems more like an effect than a desired sound. Fortunately, it becomes less noticeable as you get acclimated to it. Whirligig came out after the outstanding Desire Walks On and before the spectacular Jupiter's Darling. As the only fully original (as opposed to the usual collection of Live and Greatest Hits stuff) album by the Wilson sisters in that long period, any Heart fan should grab it, blues, phasing, and all.

A MUST HAVE for all Heart fans!

The sounds and the voices are all there, and in full force with all their beauty, range and shear talent. This is a MUST HAVE for all Heart fans. No Heart collection would be complete without it! Well worth the $s!! <3 Avalonian/MONGERRead full review...

Excellant spin-off from Heart showcases the rich vocals and instrumentation that makes heart what it is today an excellant group.
